Momus Shrugged

Momus is the Greek god of satire, mockery, scoffing, and criticism. The original hater. As such, it is no surprise he is also the god of poets and writers. On Mount Olympus, home of the Greek Gods, Momus performed much the same role as the Fool did in Shakespeare's plays, namely being the one person allowed to be critical of those in power without suffering the consequences. Of course The Fool's, and Momus' immunity was not absolute. Some criticisms were more well received than others, and there were always days when it would have better to keep one's mouth shut. But mythical manifestations of the human impulse to speak truth to power are sprinkled throughout the history of human literature for the simple reason that there always exists this desire to say what things really are, not what we are being told they are. This is the first panel of Zombie Logic Press' newest webcomic, Momus Shrugged, inked by artist Jenny Mathews of  Tiny Drawings,  and me, of, well, of this blog.

An Afternoon With Fred "Butch" Wells

Jenny has an event today, so I of course get a flurry of ideas for web comics. No problem, I think to myself, these are just dippy ideas about Jane Fonda and Dinty Moore Beef Stew, I'll just sketch out some stick figures and drop the text in on Photoshop. Right?

Wrong. 

Two hours of sketching later it turns out I can't even draw a building. And how the hell do you draw boobs on a stick figure? I don't know. I gave up, and decided to find a stock photo so I could create my Dinty Moore Beef Stew masterpiece. And here it is. This is what happens when poets are in charge of anything.

Dr. Strangedog Speaks Out Against State Rape

While Republican Presidential candidate Rick Santorum was in my hometown, Rockford, today, I thought it was appropriate to revisit Illinois House Bill 4085, which was passed by an overwhelming majority last month in the Agriculture and Conservation Committee. No, that's not a misprint, The Agriculture and Conservation Committee. Not surprising considering how a lot of leading Conservatives seem to think of women as property or livestock. The storm of protest that resulted from similar measures being introduced in Virginia and Texas cooled the vote on this one. This time. The law would require women to have an ultrasound at least 24 hours before having an abortion. The procedure to do so requires a process that is painful and invasive. Doctors don't want to do it. Most Americans don't want this to become a law, but there seems to be this never-resting minority out their obsessed with telling women (and now doctors), what they can and can't do in their own bodies. Zombie Logic Webcomic's very own Dr. Strangedog offers his opinion on being told by the State what procedures he is required to perform on unwilling women.

Mitt Romney In Rockford

Both Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum came to my town today. Rockford, Illinois. I know they did because I saw the motorcaid whiz past my window on its way to a very safe location on the outskirts of town. I doubt either of the candidates got much of a look at Downtown Rockford, where I live. It has beautiful aspects and a lot of great people trying to make positive change, but it also has plenty of decay, blight, and legions of homeless, unemployed, and discouraged people hoping for change. But with Mitt Romney's statement that "he's not concerned about the very poor," I don't hold out much hope.

Dr. Strangedog, Phil Knight, and Joe Paterno

"If there is a villain in this tragedy, it lies in that investigation and not in Joe Paterno." The Nike founder went on to say in his eulogy that the death of the pedophile defending Joe Paterno left him without a hero. You're a very bad man, Phil Knight. If there is a villain in this tragedy, it begins with a man who raped children, then extends to all of those who knew about it, and enabled him for a very, very long time, chiefly, your hero, Joe Paterno. But that villainy extends to those who seem to be either in denial that Joe Paterno knew for nearly two decades what Jerry Sandusky was doing, or just don't really care. Either way, I wouldn't expect less from a man so willing to profiteer from the suffering of children. You're a bad human being, Phil Knight, and I can only hope the gods are watching.

February 18, 2013 update: Well, it seems Nike has another murderer in their celebrity stable of heroes. Either Nike has a taste for scumbags, or they simply don't give a shit that they have more pieces of garbage in their employ than Congress.  The media can also take a bow for buying the Oscar Pistorius fairy tale hook, line, and sinker. However, The Hall of Bad Dudes was never buying it.

Papers, A Webcomic About the Arizona Immigration Law

With Mitt Romney being taken seriously as a presidential candidate this late in the campaign after everyone's original reaction (and the correct one I might add) being that he was a clown and his own party didn't even take him seriously, this webcomic Jenny did about the Arizona Immigration Law, which even Forbes thinks is bad for the economy. But hell, let's let our ignorance and blind hatred get in the way of decency and good business.

Jenny has a mortal fear of zombies. She sees them shambling across the road when she drives at night. This Saturday we went to a local concert at a bar for Halloween and there were people dressed as a group of zombies. We had to move to another area of the bar. Which is why I was shocked when she agreed to draw what I had in mind for a webcomic of a single, post zombie apocalypse zombie female looking for love.
